Baby's First Foods

I’m going to preface this section by reiterating that, especially for breastfed babies, food before one is for fun. For exploring. For playing with. For seeing what happens when you drop it on the floor. For feeling. For smelling. For squishing. So, mama, don’t worry too much if your healthy baby who is growing and happy doesn’t eat much. And if you do have a baby who eats well, that’s wonderful but don’t stress if they don’t. So, here are some of the products that helped us.

The Big Book of Organic Baby Food, by Stephanie Middleberg

This is a guide created by my friend Carley Mendes, a holistic nutritionist who specialises in pregnancy and postpartum health as well as infant health. Baby Knows Best provides everything you need to eliminate your doubts and start solids with more confidence and less stress. These series of videos and eBooks were created to support and reassure you as you enter this next big phase in your little one’s life. I can’t recommend this digital program highly enough.

This is the high chair we had for our son at around 6 months when he started on solids. It is a super comfy chair and has five recline positions and nine height positions, which is super handy. To be honest one of the things we loved to do most in this chair was to zoom our son around the house as it’s on wheels (yep, food before one was for fun!).

We have a Keekaroo Kid’s chair and love it so if you’re looking for a wooden highchair, I’d recommend this one. It is more cost effective than a Stokke chair and from a quality perspective, just as good. For babies and toddlers, 6 months to 3 years. Comfy and easy to clean infant inserts are also available.

An alternative to highchairs or an additional tool. If the idea of a weaning table is completely new to you (which it was for me when my son was a baby), check out Sprout’s adjustable weaning table and chair set. Weaning tables are a wonderful way to support your child’s development as they start eating solid food, have more mobility and seek more independence. We loved our weaning table and I’m sure you will too.

For on the go, at grandma’s house or in a restaurant, table chairs are so amazing. We loved this chair – only takes a minute to put up or take down. Great for travel and ideal for babies & toddlers between 6 and 36 months, and up to 37 pounds. The chair is also a durable & washable design.

If you’re interested in baby led weaning this is a great book to start with. And remember it doesn’t have to be an all or nothing decision – you can incorporate purees with baby led weaning too.

This baby food cookbook is the one that does it all. Natural, organic, and irresistible recipes take your baby from infant to toddler and beyond. Ideas for purees, smoothies, finger foods, and meals abound. To top it off, you get nutritious, crave-worthy recipes to satisfy both your little one and your big ones.
